Memorial tattoos are the appointments we take the most care with. There's no rushing them and no upselling them. Whether it's a signature traced from a letter, a set of dates, a portrait, or an object that only means something to your family, the goal is the same: something you'll be glad to look at on a bad day, not just a good one.

Handwriting and signatures

Tracing real handwriting is one of the most powerful things you can put on skin, and it's technically simple — but only if we get a clean source. A photograph of the original letter, card or note taken flat and straight-on, in good daylight, gives us everything we need. We reproduce the line weight and the wobble exactly; that imperfection is the whole point.

Symbols, objects and coordinates

Not every tribute is a face. We've tattooed EKG lines, boat hulls, fishing lures, handwriting on the inside of a wedding band, the coordinates of a family cabin, a father's tools, a dog's paw print. If it means something to you, it will translate. Bring the object itself if you can — we'd rather draw from the real thing.

Adding to a memorial piece over time

Families grow and losses accumulate. If there's any chance you'll want to add to a memorial piece later, tell your artist at the design stage. We'll lay the composition out so there's room to extend it, instead of you having to start over somewhere else on your body.

How do I photograph handwriting for a tattoo?

Lay the original flat in daylight, shoot straight down without flash, and fill the frame with the writing. Send the highest-resolution file you can. If you'd rather not part with the original, bring it in and we'll scan it here and hand it straight back.

Can you tattoo cremation ash into the ink?

We don't. Introducing anything into sterile ink creates a real infection and reaction risk, and no reputable studio in Michigan will do it. There are plenty of ways to make a memorial piece deeply personal that don't compromise your health, and we're glad to talk them through with you.
