New school takes traditional's bold outline and throws the restraint out the window: warped perspective, cartoon proportion, color turned all the way up, and a sense of humour. It looks effortless and it absolutely is not. Getting that many saturated colors to sit next to each other without turning muddy takes deliberate planning and a very steady hand.

Color theory doing heavy lifting

The trick to new school is separation. Every adjacent color needs either a value gap or a black line between it and its neighbour, or the whole thing greys out as it heals. Our artists plan the palette as a unit before anything goes down, mapping which colors touch and where the outline has to carry the load.

Character, graffiti and pop culture

New school grew out of graffiti and animation, and that lineage still shows — heavy dimensional lettering, characters with attitude, objects that look like they're mid-motion. It's the natural home for gaming, cartoon, comic and music subjects, and it's a genuinely fun style to sit for.
