American traditional is the style that made every other style possible, and it endures for an unglamorous engineering reason: heavy black outlines and solid saturated color are simply the most legible thing you can put into skin. Eagles, roses, daggers, panthers, anchors, hearts and script — a well-executed traditional piece looks as good at fifty as it does at fifty days.

Why the rules exist

Thick outline, limited palette, minimal shading, generous negative space. Those constraints weren't an aesthetic preference — they were what survived a working man's life in the 1930s, and they're still what survives yours. Our artists respect the rules because the rules are load-bearing, not decorative.

Flash and custom

We keep classic flash on the wall and we're always happy to tattoo it straight off the sheet — there's a real pleasure in getting a design that thousands of people have worn before you. We also draw traditional custom, applying the same rules to subjects Sailor Jerry never met. Both are equally legitimate; pick whichever you actually want.

Neo-traditional

If you like the boldness but want more rendering, more color depth and a slightly more illustrative feel, neo-traditional sits right between traditional and new school. Several of our artists work in it regularly. It costs you a little durability compared to strict traditional and buys you a lot of range.

Traditional American Tattoos — what people ask.

Is traditional tattooing cheaper than realism?

Generally it takes less chair time for a comparable size, so yes, a traditional piece often costs less than a realistic one of the same dimensions. It is not a lesser tattoo — it's a different set of demands on the artist, and the best traditional work is extremely hard to execute cleanly.

Will a traditional tattoo still look good in thirty years?

It's the style with the best track record for exactly that. The heavy outline holds the shape as the ink softens, and the limited palette avoids the pigments that fade unevenly. Traditional work from the mid-20th century is still perfectly readable today.
