Septum Piercings

Through the soft sweet spot — fast healing, easily hidden, and painless when it's placed right.

A properly placed septum piercing doesn't go through cartilage at all. It passes through a thin band of soft tissue between the cartilage and the tip of the nose — the sweet spot — which is why it's one of the least painful piercings we do and one of the fastest to heal. Piercers who miss that spot and go through cartilage produce the horror stories you've read about.

Finding the sweet spot

We locate it by feel before marking, and its position and size vary from person to person. Occasionally somebody's septum is deviated enough that the sweet spot sits noticeably off-center; in that case a truly centered-looking piercing may not be achievable, and we'll tell you that before we start rather than after.

Hiding it when you need to

The septum is the easiest visible piercing to conceal. A retainer — a small U-shaped piece of titanium — flips up inside the nose and is effectively invisible. That makes it a practical option for jobs, uniforms, family events and anything else where a ring isn't going to fly. We stock retainers and will show you how to flip it.

Healing and jewelry

Six to eight weeks for initial healing, which is quick as piercings go. We start you in a titanium clicker or circular barbell with a little extra room for swelling, then downsize you. Avoid flipping it up and down constantly in the first few weeks — the friction is what causes the smell people complain about, along with a bit of ordinary bacteria that saline handles.

Questions

Septum Piercings — what people ask.

Does a septum piercing hurt?

Less than almost anyone expects. The sweet spot is thin soft tissue, so it's a quick pinch. It does reliably make your eyes water, which is a nerve reflex and not an indication of pain — everyone laughs about it afterward.

Can I hide a septum piercing at work?

Yes, better than any other facial piercing. A titanium retainer flips up inside the nostrils and is essentially invisible unless someone is looking directly up your nose. We stock them and will show you how to flip it before you leave.
