Single-point dermal anchors and surface bars — with realistic expectations about how long they last.

A dermal anchor is a small titanium base seated under the skin with a decorative top sitting flush on the surface. It opens up placements nothing else can reach — cheekbones, collarbones, the nape, the sternum, the back of the hand. It's also the least permanent thing we do, and anyone who tells you otherwise is being dishonest with you.

How they're placed

We use a dermal punch or a needle to create a small pocket, seat the anchor's footed base in the dermis, and thread the top on. Done well the top sits flush against the skin with no visible base. Placement is chosen to avoid areas of high movement and friction, because those are what work an anchor loose.

Lifespan and rejection — the honest version

Dermals are semi-permanent. Some last many years; plenty last one to three. Your body is continuously working to expel a foreign object with nothing anchoring it but tissue growth through the base's holes. Snagging, pressure and clothing friction all shorten the life. Choose a placement that doesn't catch, and accept from the start that this is jewelry with an expiry date.

Removal is a professional job

Don't pull a dermal out. The base is held by tissue grown through it and yanking it causes tearing and a much worse scar. We remove them properly — a small incision and the anchor lifts clean. If a dermal is rejecting, migrating, or you're just done with it, come in. Removal is quick, inexpensive and far kinder to your skin.

How long do dermal piercings last?

Anywhere from about a year to five or more, depending heavily on placement and how much it gets knocked. Low-friction spots like the sternum or upper back last longest; hands, fingers and anywhere clothing rubs are the shortest-lived. Treat them as semi-permanent from day one.

Can I remove a dermal myself?

Please don't. The base is anchored by tissue that has grown through it, and pulling causes tearing and significant scarring. Removal here is a quick, minor procedure and leaves a far better result. Come in even if the dermal is already loose.
