Old ink buried properly — with an honest assessment of what's possible before you commit.

Cover-up work is a specialty in its own right, and it starts with a conversation most shops skip: whether your idea is actually coverable. Black cannot be covered with light color. A dense old piece cannot be hidden under a delicate one. We will tell you what's genuinely possible, what would need a few laser sessions first, and what we'd recommend instead — before you've spent a dollar.

The honest assessment

Bring the tattoo in. In five minutes we can tell you the realistic options: cover it as-is with a design in the right value range, fade it with two or three laser sessions and then cover it with far more freedom, or rework it into something better without full concealment. Photos over the phone aren't good enough for this — we need to see the density and the depth in person.

Designing a cover-up that doesn't look like one

The giveaway on a bad cover-up is a suspiciously dark blob with no reason to be there. A good one has its own internal logic — a subject whose natural dark areas happen to land exactly where the old ink is. That means the design gets built around your existing tattoo rather than picked from a book. Flowing organic subjects, Japanese backgrounds, dense florals and black and grey realism all give an artist the most room to work.

When laser makes sense

A few sessions of laser removal — not full removal, just enough to knock the density down — expands your options enormously and often means a lighter, more interesting cover instead of a heavy one. It costs time and money upfront and it's frequently worth it. We'll refer you to reputable removal specialists in the area and tell you how many sessions we'd want before we start.

Can any tattoo be covered up?

Almost any, but not always with the design you had in mind. Solid black and heavily saturated dark work severely limit what can go over it. The honest answer for your specific tattoo takes a two-minute look in person, and that consultation is free.

Do I need laser removal before a cover-up?

Not always. If the existing tattoo is light, aged or line-based, we can often cover it directly. If it's dense and dark, two or three laser sessions to fade it will give you dramatically more design freedom. We'll tell you which category yours falls into and refer you if needed.

Will the old tattoo show through eventually?

Not if it's covered properly. Ink placed over old ink sits in the same dermal layer and doesn't migrate apart. Ghosting happens when the cover design was too light for the piece underneath — which is exactly the mistake the assessment stage exists to prevent.
